Socks are probably the most universal item of clothing ever invented! There areRT_AW12_MW_Sock Stack aw14 sport socks, dress socks, trainer socks and a host of other styles in between. Some are hand-made, while others are mass-produced and sold in bulk.

With such a large range of sock styles to choose from, it comes as no surprise that men often grab the first pair that comes to hand. However, there are a few tips and tricks to choosing the right ones.

History of Socks

Socks, have been around for an extremely long time – possibly even since the Ice Age. The first socks or foot coverings were as simple as an animal wrap. It was around the first or second century AD that the Romans introduced the modern sock style, which is still used today. In the century which followed, sock styles changed according to fashion, from full length to knee length and finally, the huge variety of styles available today.

Why Wear Socks?

Although socks are traditionally worn during the colder months, there is also very good reason to wear them even in hotter weather. A bare foot in a shoe is not only bad for the foot itself, but it can dramatically reduce the durability of the shoe too. Socks effectively protect shoes from foot odour, which would eventually become unbearable. They can also ensure the wearer does not develop blisters and corns and will help the shoe to fit.

Types of Socks

As with any garment, there are many different kinds of socks. From athletics socks to dress socks, the activity and the shoe type will dictate which to opt for on any particular occasion.

Dress Sock– Medium height, thin sock designed to be worn with dress trousers or a suit.

Running sock– ankle-length socks which effectively draw moisture away from the foot.

Thermal Sock– Socks with additional padding and material to trap heat.

Men’s wool socks can be found in a vast array of designs and styles. Take a look at our range of wool socks today.
