Choosing Tattersall Check Shirts

country shirts

Tattersall is a type of plaid or check pattern, consisting of thin stripes woven into cloth to form squares.  Typically, Tattersall check shirts are designed using two colours that alternate. The pattern is usually achieved using a lighter colour base fabric with darker stripes.  It is believed the name ‘Tattersall’ originates from the Tattersall Horse Market, started in 1766, London, where checked horse blankets were sold.

Today Tattersall is a very common and popular pattern used in shirts and waistcoats.  When shopping for men’s Tattersall shirts, you will find an array of different options to choose from, from casual to formal. The differences include types of cut, shape, colour, fit and design. It is possible to buy men’s shirts in a range of fabrics, with the most popular being polyester, silk, cotton, flannel or synthetic blends.

Due to the large selection available, it can prove difficult to choose a specific shirt for a particular occasion. Following the tips below should help.

Size

The first step to buying a suitable shirt is to determine what size is required. Measure around the thickest part of the neck to determine collar size. Allow enough room for two fingers to fit just inside the collar. For the chest size, measure around the torso under the armpits. Again, allow for a little extra breathing space. To measure the arms for sleeve length, take one of your well-fitting shirts and, with the back facing you, measure from the centre of the collar to the shoulder seam and along the sleeve to the end of the cuff.  For the most accurate measurement, ask someone else to measure you whilst you are wearing the shirt.

Types of Shirts

Button-Down Shirtsleyburn mole jeans

Tattersall check shirts are often button-down. They are great for smart-casual occasions – more formal than a t-shirt but still comfortable. Button-down shirts typically have a button-down collar, sleeves and cuffs. They can be worn either tucked in or untucked, depending upon personal preference. Dress button-downshirts up or down by wearing them with more formal trousers or jeans.

Dress Shirts

Much more formal than button-down shirts, dress shirts tend to be made with high-quality smart fabrics and should be worn tucked in with formal trousers.  Tattersall men’s shirts can be worn with or without a tie. They may also be teamed with a suit jacket and/or waistcoat for slightly more formal occasions or when the weather is on the colder side.
