Yorkshire Days Out. Issue 1: Thirsk

Based in Thirsk we are immensely proud of our Yorkshire heritage. Joseph Turner is located in the great county of North Yorkshire and we are lucky to have some of the best suppliers of quality fabrics and yarns on our doorstep. We are also surrounded by quaint market towns, picturesque views and welcoming country pubs.

We thought we would share a few of our favourite places to visit and things to do in and around Thirsk:

Sunday Lunch at the Carpenters Arms, Felixkirk.

THE CARPENTERS ARMS1

This cosy country inn and restaurant is a personal favourite for the staff here at Joseph Turner. It is set in the picturesque village of Felixkirk and overlooks the beautiful Vale of Mowbray.

The Carpenters Arms has a traditional bar, stocked with local beers, hand pulled ales and a considered wine list. With its large wooden tables, beautiful scenery and roaring open fires, it is the perfect place for a relaxed lunch during the colder months. They also have a tiered terrace that overlooks the Vale for al fresco dining when the weather is warmer.

Walk up Sutton Bank and the White Horse.

There isn’t a shortage of country walks in Yorkshire and we are fortunate to have one of the most recognisable and picturesque walks on our doorstep. Sutton Bank is situated at the edge of the North York Moors National park and is home to some spectacular panoramic views looking over the Vale of Mowbray. It is a popular spot for gliders too so you will no doubt be able to spot a few soaring above as you stroll through the woodland.

A short walk away is the White Horse of Kilburn; a figure of a horse cut into the hillside. This well-known land mark is visible from miles around and provides a great photo opportunity! The White Horse is 3014ft long and 228ft high and around 20 people could stand on the grass island, which forms the eye. Unlike the horses in the South of England which are cut into chalk and naturally white, the Kilburn white horse is cut into limestone and needs artificial whitening.

A day at the Races, Thirsk Racecourse

THIRSK RACECOURSE

Our offices are situated in the quaint market town of Thirsk. For such a small town there isn’t a shortage of things to do. Thirsk racecourse is a perfect way to experience the beauty and excitement of a great Yorkshire day out. It is located between the North Yorkshire Moors and the Dales and is a beautiful, picturesque racecourse that has excellent facilities and high quality racing.
